What is The Future of The Internet? – (Friend UPdate #3)

Posted on Posted in News

Dan and Adam catch up with Hogne Titlestad, the founder, chief architect and COO of Friend to find out his vision for the future and what technologies are about to change the Internet.

We also welcome viewers on the new Blockchain based video service DTube. It’s totally decentralised an appears to be a brilliant alternative to Youtube!

Technologies such as Blockchain and IPFS are making the headlines all over the technology blogs at the moment, we find out how they will shape the future of data access and how Friend fits into this vision.

What is IPFS?

Creating something like Friend gives us new challenges everyday. Being an operating system for the Internet we aim to integrate the most useful technologies that it has to offer.

The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is a protocol designed to create a permanent and decentralized method of storing and sharing files. It is a content-addressable, peer-to-peer hypermedia distribution protocol where nodes in the IPFS network form a distributed file system.

IPFS is an open-source project developed since 2014 by Protocol Labs with help from the open-source community.

IPFS is clearly a revolutionising technology and we think it will be part of the technological push that will let the Internet fulfill its promise of decentralised possibilities and self control. It will also allow everybody to publish content without having to rent webspace or whatever.

To integrate Friend with IPFS we had to adapt our DOSdriver interface to support node.js based drivers. now as this is done we face the task to create something that resembles a file system in the traditional sense while using IPFS.

We are in the process of creating a filesystem driver that will allow our users to create files and folders and keep them in a coherent structure across all devices. This includes inbuilt encryption and will allow the user to turn encryption off for chosen files they wish to make publicy available on the internet.

This effort is part of our wider strategy to enable and empower everybody with our world computer which will give you your digital home.
